UK Athletics - Race Walking World Cup

10 05 2008

Race Walking World Cup - report 10 May 2008 Junior Men’s 10 Kilometres Ben Wears got the Norwich Union GB team off to a solid start this weekend when he finished 38th in the Junior Men’s 10 Kilometres at the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup.Wears made a positive start, passing 3km in 12.59 in 30th place. At the front the Russian duo of Strelkov and Bartsaykin lead a group of 6 through halfway in 20.21.However Wears bright start was threatened when he began to suffer from a major stitch at the 4 km point, and between 4 and 6km lost over a minute, as he passed halfway in 52nd position in 23.07.Recovering from his stitch in the second half, he was able to get going again and began to move through the field. He came home in a creditable 38th place in a Seasons Best of 45.22, as the Russian winner Aleskey Bartsaykin took the title in a new Junior World Record of 39.37. Russia won the team race from China.Wears said after the race “I am very disappointed as I am in great shape at the moment. The stitch came on after 4km and I could do nothing for 2km. Fortunately I was able to get going again in the last 4km as it wore off”.The action continues in Russia for GB tomorrow with Daniel King and Dominic King in action in the 50 Kilometres and British Record Holder Jo Jackson tackling the 20 Kilometres.

iaaf.org - Heffernan asking the right questions ahead of Cheboksary

9 05 2008

Cheboksary, Russia - For a long time Robert (Robbie) Heffernan showed potential for honours at highest level - but injuries and disqualifications halted his progress for much of the time since his first IAAF Race Walking Cup in 1999. Now the guidance of Robert Korzeniowski and the environment of his training group seems to have turned round the career of the affable Cork man - meaning he is, perhaps, Ireland’s top hope for an athletics medal in Beijing.“I’m going well and you can’t write anything off”, said Heffernan in confident mood the day before traveling from his training base in Poland to Cheboksary, Russia for the 23rd IAAF World Race Walking Cup (10-11 May 2008).

iaaf.org - Schwazer is experienced yet young enough to believe “everything is possible”

7 05 2008

Officially, the fastest competitor for this Sunday’s IAAF World Race Walking Cup 50km (11 May) is Italy’s Alex Schwazer, not that the double World Championship bronze medal winner is approaching this event expecting to secure a podium place.“I am sure that the Russians will dominate the race” he said, before departing for Cheboksary.
Schwazer also makes the hosts strong favourites for the team race in front of a likely massive home crowd of supporters.“For the team competition they could even be placed with all their athletes in the top five places if everyone in their team does a good job.”
His reluctance to predict he will be among them isn’t due to modesty - but the lessons of a short, yet up-and-down, career to date. One that has taught him that victory over 50km is not just about being in the best condition but also playing a waiting game - needing to be timed to perfection.
